HOW VODACOM MOZAMBIQUE SAVED EMISSION OF 1,200 GREENHOUSE GAS

Vodacom Mozambique is making significant strides in environmental sustainability and social responsibility, as highlighted by its chairman, Lucas Chachine. Through the conversion of power systems in 300 additional antennas to solar panels, the company has successfully avoided the emission of 1,200 tonnes of greenhouse gases in 2023 alone.

Chachine emphasized the company’s commitment to societal and environmental values, citing their installation of 287 rural antennas powered by solar energy and the conversion of 35 antennas from diesel to electricity over the past two years. These initiatives have not only reduced greenhouse gas emissions but also generated almost a million kilowatts of clean energy.

As a leading telecommunications provider in Mozambique with over 2,000 employees, Vodacom has played a significant role in the sector’s growth. Over the course of twenty years, they have connected more than 12 million Mozambicans and expanded network coverage to reach 86% of the population. Their investment in 5G technology further solidifies their position as an industry leader.

Chachine highlighted ongoing investments, including a $25 million project to construct a new data center in Matola, near Maputo. Additionally, the company has invested in expanding its network with 300 strategically distributed telecom stations across all provinces, with a focus on the northern region.

While considering potential future ventures such as entering the television market, Vodacom remains committed to initiatives like the “Faz Crescer” program. This program, aimed at enhancing education, provides computer labs and free connectivity to state schools. With plans to expand the program to 100 schools nationwide, Vodacom continues to demonstrate its dedication to empowering communities and fostering growth.
